* After multiple interruptions caused by political and natural happenings. We have successfully reached stage 3 (Laying Concrete Roof) of our project.

* We started by demolishing the old worn out building. Pictures below.

* We have run into some additional expenses that we could not initially foresee. One of them is the lack of water at the building site.  Currently, we are purchasing water.  We are looking at purchasing and installing Compressor / Pump. 

Updates: 04th October 2016

* We are all set to start the reconstruction of Nanjaloor school in full flow. We have signed construction agreement with the builder (Arch Matrix). Please visit this link to view the contract.
* The work is expected to get started in the next few days.

* We have transferred the first installment amount of Rs. 5,00,000 (Rupees Five Lakhs) to ArchMatrix.

 * South Indian Association of UK (Derby) has contributed Rs. 2, 87,000 (Rupees Two lakh Eight Seven Thousands) towards Nanjaloor School reconstruction.

 Updates: 08th August 2016

Vazhai NGO, headed by Mr. Anbu Sivam has come forward to join hands with us in rebuilding the Nanjalur School.

* Mr. Anbu Sivam and Paddy Padmanabhan visited Nanjalur school during the weekend and met with the headmaster of the school.

* The building is severely damaged and needs to be constructed again from scratch. Photos below.

* We already have the necessary permission from the government (Adi Dravidar Welfare Department) to carry out this task.

* We needed the headmaster's consent too. So, we made a formal written request to the headmaster by meeting him face to face and got a written consent back from him.

* We are still short of funds by about 4 to 5 lakhs. We are hopeful of raising it. Your help in overcoming the shortage of funds is requested and will be greatly appreciated.

* We will request work breakdown and schedule from Arch Matrix next.

* We will have Arch Matrix's response reviewed by Udayanad and Gunasekar, our batchmates from Civil Engg, PSG Tech 83-87.

 Update : July 2016

• First (Kalaimagal) school reconstruction complete. It was inaugurated by the District Elementary Education Officer, Cuddalore. Photos below.

  • We are onto rebuilding the 2nd school (Government Adi Dravidar Elementary School) now.  

  • The total budget is 12 lakhs. 

  • We have managed to raise Rs 2.5 Lakhs so far.
    An NGO by name Vazhai has come forward to pitch in donations. 

  • We have run into administrative/government roadblocks in accepting donations from South Indian Association of UK, Derby. We are unable to accept donations from abroad as we are NOT an NGO with the necessary permissions to receive donations from abroad. We are trying to connect with NGOs who can accept the payment and then re-route the same towards our school reconstruction project.

   

        Update : 3rd March 2016

• First (Kalaimagal) school work is nearing completion. It is expected to get completed in the next week or so. 
•  Initiated paperwork to get permission from the Adi Dravidar Welfare department for the reconstruction of the second school in Nanjalur. We need to get the permission quickly so that our reconstruction work does not get blocked because of election commission’s code of conduct rules. 
• Scheduled a face-to-face meeting with Adi Dravidar Welfare department officials in Cuddalore on 5^th March 2016.

List of tasks completed.(1st Feb 2016)

• Identified a few schools.
• Established contact with government officials.
• Initiated contact with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) people. Limited progress so far.
• Continued to mobilise funds.
• Received two revised and final quotes for the 1st school's reconstruction. First quote was from an ex-student of Ms. Asha Karthikeyan. Second quote is from a person known to Mr. Babu Shankar
• Forwarded the quotes to Mr. Udayanad of Niketa Constructions (http://www.niketa.in) and Mr. Gunashekar of IshaHomes (http://www.ishahomes.com) from Civil Engineering.
•  Gunashekar (90943 - 33304) of IshaHomes and Mr. Arul (97917-25051) of Niketa constrcutions reviewed the quotes and evaluated vendors. They recommended Messrs. Arch Matrix as the vendor.
• Had a 3 way face to face discussion with the chosen vendor,  head master and a staff member of the school assigned for supervising the reconstruction effort and me / us. 
• Started reconstruction of first school (1st Feb 2016).

High level steps

1. Identify schools.

For each school
2. Quantify the reconstruction effort .
3. Come up with a rough estimate for the money required.
4. Sanitize the data in consultation with government officials.
    Ensure that there is no chance of  false claim of a work by a government civil contractor.
5. Validate the expense estimate in consultation with experts from Civil construction field.
6. Come up with a work break down and execution plan.
     Work break down should contain tasks, dependency of tasks, identification of critical tasks.
      Execution plan should contain dates, duration
7. Identify a list of vendors
8. Identify potential "leakage and pilferage" possibilities and come up with a way to arrest them
9. Identify a list of volunteers who will directly participate
